William A. Withers, 89, WWII, Korean vet, Miller- Hess retiree, antique dealer

William Alfred Withers, 89, of Denver, passed away Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at the Ephrata Community Hospital.

He was born in York to the late Walter R. and Jean S. (Hoffman) Withers and was the husband of the late Charlotte (Kreider) Withers.

Alfred was a member of the Donegal Presbyterian Church, Mt. Joy. He retired from Miller Hess Shoe Co., as a buyer, and most recently had been an antique and collectible dealer. Alfred was a graduate of the Merchant Marine Academy and Ursinus College. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII and the Korean War. He was a member of the Christian Motorcyclists Association, enjoyed antiques, collectibles and motorcycling.

Alfred is survived by his companion: Shirley Boan of Denver; six children: Andrea Wildman of South Mountain; Douglas, husband of Ina Withers of Ephrata; Lawrence, husband of Jenny Withers of Jacksonville, Fla.; Patricia, wife of John Kananen of Tamarac Fla.; Bill Withers, husband of Susan Firestone of Decatur, Ga.; Pamela Withers of Wrightsville; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and a brother: Gerald, husband of Sara Withers of Mt. Gretna.

Memorial services for William Alfred Withers will be held Jan. 25 at 11 a.m. at the Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Rd., Mt. Joy, with Rev. Tom McKinnon officiating. Interment will be held in the adjoining church cemetery with a reception following at the church.
