Melvin E. Horning, 85, Army vet, feed salesman

Melvin E. Horning, 85 of Tilden Township died Friday, March 15 on his 55th wedding anniversary in the Laurel Center, Tilden Township. He was the husband of Jean (Moyer) Horning.

Mel was born in Denver and was the son of the late Alvin B. and Anna May (Ackerman) Horning. He was also the step son of the late Sarah (Martin) Horning.

Melvin was a member of St. Michael's Church, Tilden Township, Ephrata Masonic Lodge #665, and served in the U.S Army during the Korean War serving in Europe. He served on the Tilden Township zoning hearing board for 30 years and was a member of the executive committee at the Hamburg Center for several years.

He was a feed salesman for many years in the Denver area before coming to Hamburg. He was a partner in the former Moyer's Hardware Store, Hamburg for 12 years and later owned the Hamburg News Agency.

His hobbies included hunting, landscaping and lawn care, playing golf with his grandson, and bowling.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter: Lisa J. (Horning), wife of Michael E. Wolf, Enola; and two grandchildren: Campbell M. and Carly E. Wolf.

He is also survived by his siblings: Elton Horning, Reinholds; Florence (Horning), widow of John Stoltzfus, Atglen; Helen (Horning), wife of Nelson Lehman, Lancaster; Doris (Horning), wife of Dale Stoltzfus, Lititz; Alvin B. Horning, Jr., husband of Roberta, Morgantown; Janet (Horning), wife of Kenneth Hartzler, Manheim; Eileen (Horning) Beiler, Lancaster; Phillip Horning, husband of Melissa (Gill) Horning, Morgantown; a step-sister, Eleanor (Snyder), wife of Richard Kauffman, Columbia.

Melvin was predeceased by a sister: Mildred (Mast) Horning; and two brothers: Kenneth and Leonard Horning.

Burial will take place in St. John's Cemetery at the convenience of the family. A celebration of life will take place at St. Michael's Church, 529 St. Michaels Road, Hamburg, on Friday, March 22 at 11 a.m.
