Thomas S. Stauffer, 88, vet, Kurtz superintendent

Thomas S. Stauffer, 88, of Ephrata, passed away Sunday, April 21 2013, at Ephrata Manor.

He was born in Ephrata Township, to the late Frank and Barbara (Stauffer) Stauffer and was the husband of Nancy J. (Miley) Stauffer, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage.

Thomas served his country in the US Army from 1948-1950. He was a long-time member of Bethany United Church of Christ, Ephrata where he served as head usher for many years.

Thomas worked for Kurtz Bros. Concrete and High Concrete Structures for 38 years, 35 of those as superintendent of the Denver concrete plant. Thomas was a 51-year member of Ephrata Blue Lodge F&AM #665 Ephrata, Lancaster Lodge of Perfection 14th Degree, Valley of Reading Lodge, and Reading Consistory 32nd Degree. He was also a member of Rajah Shrine Temple of Reading serving on the reception committee. He was a life member of the Ephrata VFW Post 3376 and a 51-year member of the Ephrata Legion Post 429.

Tom was happiest when he was out in the yard working, planting flowers and feeding birds and squirrels. He loved going to the mountains in upstate Pennsylvania where he could enjoy time with this family.

In addition to his wife, Thomas is survived by his three children: Jeff T. Stauffer of Denver; Beverly J., wife of Clarence Gerhart of Denver; Audrey M. Stoner of Denver; four grandchildren: Shawn, husband of Tia (Sanders) Stauffer of Ephrata; Nick, husband of Heather (Gehman) Gerhart of East Earl; Ashley Gerhart of Denver; Adrienne Gerhart of Manayunk; three great-grandchildren; and three siblings: Lily Martin of Kentucky; Maude Auker of Ephrata; and Calvin, husband of Josephine Stauffer of Port Trevorton.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and seven sisters.

A viewing will be held April 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut St., Denver, followed by a Masonic Service at 8 p.m. An additional viewing will be held on Thursday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Bethany United Church of Christ, 140 East Main St., Ephrata, followed by funeral services held at 10 a.m, with Rev. William J. LaSalle officiating. Interment will take place in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Ephrata. Military honors will be accorded by the Red Rose Honor Guard.
